New Artist: Rod Melancon

Hear his new disc on the Bear - including this song....

Tim Howard is - amazing!

Sad as I am that the US is out of the World Cup, I couldn't be prouder of a guy who has been nothing but spectacular for over a dozen years...he was an unknown out of New Jeraey who sufffered from Tourette's Syndrome - he's now one of the top five goalkeepers in the world and proved it against Belgium...he's 35 now, and this is probably his last World Cup - here are all of Tim Howard's record-breaking saves...

Ryan Adams Is Back!

Once thought to be the next great artist one step away from a nervous breakdown or overdose, Ryan Adams has put his life back together after his marriage to singer and actress Mandy Moore. We debuted his new song on last week's Cutting Edge Countdown (Sundays at 6), and you can hear it on the Bear. Ryan has been crippled by stage fright for years, and you can see it during this clip - he hardly looks at anyone while playing one of the best songs he has ever written...

Babe Ruth is Retiring

We will never see his like again...David Letterman is leaving us.

Dixie Chicks

There are hints that the group that saved country music might get back together and record their first disc in eight years. If so, this perfromance should serve as the template for their sound. The Chicks (including a punked-out Natalie) were performing at London's massive O Center last week and added this song to their set after finding out that Miley Cyrus started singing "Landslide" the week before... yes, it's "Wrecking Ball", Dixie Chicks style....

Bruuuuce!

He and the E Street Band really can play ANYTHING....from the Australian tour, late February...

New Johnny Cash

The "rediscovered" album Out Among The Stars is set for release in the next few weeks - here is the first track from the disc, a David Allan Coe song done J. Cash style...

Girls, Guns and Glory

Set to play in both Bellefonte and Williamsport over the next few weeks, here's New England's
Girls, Guns and Glory from their new disc, Good Luck...

Deana Carter

Great new song from an artist we've heard too little from the last few years...she's now a mom!

Kerri Powers

She came and played the Bear Bash years ago...and today she's better than ever....

Wade Bowen

Female artists like Kasey Musgraves (Grammy Award winner for Best County Album), Brandy Clark and Holly Willams are writing and singing songs about human emotions and feelings - Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Lee Brice - not so much. Wade Bowen has had about enough of the booze, broads and truck culture, as he outlines here...

Rod Picott

Sometimes it's nice to look back and focus on stuff we played over the last year, like this from Rod Picott...

Sons of Bill

Or this one from Sons of Bill...

Rosanne Cash

It's the album of her career (so far) - The River And The Thread...and every song is just as good as this one...

More Steve Earle/ More Greg Trooper

Because a show this good can't be defined by just a few songs...

Steve Earle/Greg Trooper

We're proud to announce our new affiliation with The State Theatre in State College, starting with a terrific show coming Thursday, February 27th - Americana guru Steve Earle, with Jersey Boy Greg Trooper opening. The show starts at 8 - if you have never been the The State, it's an intimate 500 or so seat house with great sight lines and wonderful sound. Go to www.thestatetheatre.org to get tickets, or listen to the Bear to win a limited number of free tickets to this show, and look in each month's Good News to get the latest State schedule.

Here's a sample of what you will hear Thursday...

and from Greg...

Blue Rodeo

They are an institution in Canada - not as well known here, even though they are celebrating their 30th year together...the latest disc is their 13th! It's called In Our Nature, and this beautiful video has just been released...

Carolina Story

The husband and wife team of Ben and Emily Roberts have released a six song EP called, appropriately, Chapter One - and it's great - we were tipped to this band by our friend, Bob Mitchell - find out more about them in the March edition of Good News, soon to be available at over 200 locations throughout BearCountry and within this website...here are Ben and Emily and their latest video...

Court Yard Hounds

So it's the middle of the worst winter in memory, and spring seems so far away...leave it to Martie and Emily to make you feel better...with this fan-generated video set to "The World Smiles" from their latest disc, Amelita. Brings a tear to your eye, and hope to your heart...

Happy Valentine's Day!

Here's a musical expression of the holiday, from Willy and Cody of Reckless Kelly...

Holly Williams

A striking tune first played on the Bear as part of the "long form" segment on the Cutting Edge Countdown, Sunday nights from 6 'til 7. You can find the track on Holly's disc "The Highway", and the video right here...

Bruce Down Under

So Bruce Springsteen brought the E Street Band to Perth, Australia last night - and realized it was the hometown of the late AC/DC singer Bon Scott when he saw a statue proudly erected in the downtown area. So what do you think happened?

A bar band style tribute to a rock idol performed by an Americana artist - the definition of cutting edge country!

Brandy Clark

There are a wealth of new, smart, young female singer-songwriters fighting the good fight to try to keep trucks, beer and booty out of the musical conversation - Brandy Clark knows what to do when her boyfriend strays, but seemingly can't bring herself to do it...

Allman Brothers Band

Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have decided to leave the Brothers at the end of this year...after initial discomfort, long-time fans have come to embrace them because of song choices like this...

Stuff I've Been Waiting To Post

It takes a long time to re-do a website - and even longer for me to make it look the way we want. Now that THAT has been accomplished, here is an amazing performances I've wanted to share since, oh, last summer...

It's the Tedeschi/Trucks Band and Grace Potter working together on a John Prine and a
Grateful Dead medley...

Lyle Lovett/John Hiatt

A great show is set for Sunday night at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport - hear back-to-back Lovett/Hiatt tracks on the Cutting Edge Countdown with Dr. Dave between 6 and 7 - right before showtime at 7:30 - on on the Bear!

Golf Clubs, Taylor, Bottle Rockets

Welcome back to bear999.com – it’s been a few weeks of hell behind
the scenes at the radio station, with computers failing and new equipment
placed into service, with a pretty tough learning curve. Things seem to be
calming down a bit, so let me post three pieces of genius before the next
disaster breaks out (just kidding! – no, I’m really not…)

And to complete our three-fer, two of the best Americana discs ever have just been
re-released – from the St. Louis-based band, the Bottle Rockets. Contemporaries of
Uncle Tupelo (the explosive mix of singer/songwriters Jeff Tweedy, who later founded Wilco,
and Jay Farrar, who founded Son Volt), the Bottle Rockets have been ignored for far
too long. Their first disc, released on a small, local label, and their second “The
Brooklyn Side”, long unavailable, can be purchased all over the web – you are advised
to do so without delay.

A track from that second disc…

Back with more soon – if everything doesn’t go down the tubes again…

Bonnie Bishop

A lot has happened to our friend Bonnie Bishop since she appeared live at
Avenue 209 in Lock Haven last December – one of her songs won a Grammy, Bonnie
Raitt couldn’t stop talking about her talent to Craig Ferguson, David Letterman
and Jay Leno, and her latest disc sold really well(available at bonniebishop.com)
Now one of her songs was featured on the ABC TV series “Nashville” this past
Wednesday, and Bonnie made a video to celebrate, and sent it to us….enjoy!

Eric Brace and Peter Cooper

Eric (leader of our favorite band, Last Train Home) appears here with his
sometime partner Peter Cooper and classic country royalty Marty Stuart,
Mac Wiseman and Duane Eddy(!) for a re-do of the Tom T. Hall song “Mad”.
Enjoy!

Sheryl Crow

Great new country-fied disc released today by Sheryl Crow – here are
three of her new songs from “Feels Like Home” performed with her full
band live in the studio…

Pure Grain

Because they were so great at the Bear Bash….
